Horse riders know all too well the importance of wearing safe and comfortable clothes on the trails, and when the weather changes, having the proper horse riding gear is crucial to staying warm and dry. Today, we’ll show you what to wear horse riding that works any time of year, and especially for those days where the weather just doesn’t want to cooperate.
What to Wear Horse Riding
Helmet
First and foremost, it’s always recommended to wear a ASTM/SEI compliant horse riding helmet for safety. While it should be safe, it should also be comfortable, and while you’re at it; stylish! The Spruce Pets notes that what to wear horse riding is a new helmet, never one purchased secondhand. They also note that you should plan on spending at least $50 on your new ASTM/SEI compliant helmet.
Apparel
You’ll want to wear clothes that aren’t restrictive but can also keep you warm if the weather changes during your time on the trails. Heated vests are a great clothing option to wear riding, since you can wear them with or without heat activation, always maintaining freedom of arm movement. On early morning rides or riding in variable conditions, layering heated base layers under water and windproof layers (ideally with a little stretch or room to move around) will help you stay both warm and dry. Nevertheless, you should always carry a waterproof or resistant jacket in case the weather takes a turn, and a bright or reflective vest so others can clearly identify you.
Hands & Feet
New and experienced horse riders alike know what to wear horse riding for footwear in the cold, and it isn’t snow boots. Ideally, you should choose a riding boot with a low tread and about a 1 to 1.5” heel. Since hiking and winter boots have thicker treads, you could experience unwanted jams in the stirrups if a fall occurs. If you’re worried about keeping your feet warm, heated socks can help.
Riders also need their hands to be quick and nimble, which means they’ll need to stay warm and fully functional. Heated gloves are a great layering option to keep the wind away from your hands while giving you the ability to warm them up if rain or cold winds should join you on your ride. When you’re on your way to and from the trail, loading up the trailer or cleaning the stalls, a heated beanie to keep your head and ears warm can provide great company!
