What Kind of Pants to Wear for Snowboarding?

What Kind of Pants to Wear for Snowboarding? - Gobi Heat

Despite the unknowns surrounding COVID-19’s impact on the 2020 ski season, ski resorts are still making every effort to give their loyal riders the epic season they deserve. Whether you’re a newbie snowboarder or want to improve your riding game in 2020, make sure you hit the slopes with the right cold-weather gear to keep you warm, dry and comfortable on every run.

What Pants to Wear for Snowboarding?

True riders know that the conditions on the slopes aren't always predictable or perfect. While we all love riding on fresh powder, sometimes you have to make the best of what you’ve been given. Be ready for anything the weather throws at you with the right snowboarding pants. Of course, you’ll want them to be comfortable and stylish, but what really makes the difference on the mountain is how they function for you. When trying to figure out what pants to wear snowboarding, there are a few factors you’ll want to keep in mind.

Are They Waterproof?

There are going to be days where the slopes are just a little more wet than usual, and if you’re just learning how to ride, you may spend more time on the ground than on your board (sorry, but it’s true). Either way, it’s going to be important that your snowboarding pants are waterproof. Backcountry.com says that the majority of snowboard pants have a waterproof rating between 5,000-20,000mm (the higher the number, the more water-resistant the fabric). Make sure your pants either have a waterproof rating or are made from well known waterproof materials like Gore-Tex. For extra measure, fully taped seams add more waterproofing protection.

Are They Warm?

Now, this one is completely dependent on the wearer. Someone who “runs hot” isn’t necessarily going to want the same level of insulation as someone who is always cold will and vice versa. Ask yourself how easily you get cold or heat up and what level of insulation is going to be comfortable enough to keep you on the slopes without freezing up or overheating.

Wondering what to wear under snowboarding pants? Heated base layers are a great option! Heated base layers can be used with or without the heating mechanisms activated, giving you a comfortable base layer that can be turned up a notch for those bitter cold days on the slopes. Top off your outfit with a heated jacket or heated snowboarding jacket that can also be used with or without the heating elements for your warmest, most comfortable season yet.

What About Gaiters, Venting & Bibs?

Gaiters

The sole purpose of gaiters is to keep snow out of your pants and boots. We recommend making sure your next pair of pants have gaiters.

Vents

Even on a cold day, your body can overheat. Having vents you can unzip to allow air circulation will feel great. Plus, vented snowboarding pants can be worn in warmer weather skiing, so you won’t have to buy a second pair just for warmer days. Win, win!

Bibs

Bibs are great for adding a second layer of warmth, and protection from rainy conditions, gusts of cold wind, and keeping snow out of your undergarments. Plus, wearing snowboarding pants with bibs means you won't have to constantly adjust your pants around the waist, and who doesn’t love that?
